Thursday evening dives

Posted on June 24, 2019

Lets go diving

We will be starting up the regular Thursday evening boat dives out of Brighton.

This is a great opportunity for everyone to get out there and do some proper diving in the sea, rather than splashing about in muddy ponds.

We are looking to arrange the first one on the 4th July, So who wants to go??

Each week will be a maximum of 8 divers on a first come basis. If you want to book for this week, please call the shop.

All this is going to cost is £25 for the dive, payable directly to the skipper, cash please, unless you need to hire equipment, which we can of course help you with. You can park in the marina for free and of course if you are a club member your air is free too.

Please remember… if you book a space on the boat, please go, as these dives are run on the basis that if you book a space, you pay for the space.

‘Defiance’ is a hard boat moored at the Marina and it has a diver lift on it, so no climbing up ladders!

The dives will generally be between 10m and 18m dives, so virtually every one can do these.

Ocean View at Paddle Round the Pier 2018

Paddle round the pier update report

Well it was a scorcher of a weekend, that’s for sure!

Our stand at PaddleWe were at Paddle Round the Pier with our Regional Manager from PADI Emma Hewitt, and Territory Director Jonas Samuelsson.

We were working alongside our friends at another local Dive Centre, Oyster Diving.

Together we were representing the dive industry as a strong front promoting diving in general and diving in the UK, lots of visitors to the stand were surprised at just how much we have to offer just off of our coast line in the UK.

During the weekend, there were so many fantastic events going on, but as we were busy chatting to so many people about courses and local diving, we didn’t get time to go and watch any of the fun paddle races in the sea.

We ran a joint raffle prize draw over the weekend, for 2 chances to win a Discover Scuba Diving experience for 4 people, worth £200, 1 prize being offered from each dive centre. To make all things fair, we got the Paddle organisers team to pick the names out of the bag, we have informed our lucky winner, who will receive a Discover Scuba Diving session for themselves and three friends, what a great treat to bring some new fans to the underwater world.

Jonas in Historical Dive gearWe were in the middle of the Paddle site, opposite the Historical Diving Society stand and tank. Jonas Samuelsson (PADI) and Paul from Oyster both got the chance to get suited and booted and went into the huge big tank in full-on original Brass helmet dive gear… what a great opportunity to see and experience what diving back in the day was really like.

In the tank

We were also lucky enough to get a couple of slots to go into the tank on Sunday, with our normal very light and portable dive gear on, we were just playing, the kids certainly loved the bubble rings!

I think in this shot I was mid mask removal – sunglasses replacement…

All in all, a great weekend, by the end of which we were all a little bit glowing!

Apparently Angela can smile

If you came by to say hello, thanks for the visit!

Sussex Seasearch Presentation and Seasearch Observer course opportunity

Posted on April 16, 2018

Sussex Seasearch

We are very pleased to announce that we will be visited by Sarah Ward of Sussex Wildlife Trust on Wednesday 2nd May.

Club opens at 7pm as usual, presentation to start at 8pm.

Sarah works for Sussex Wildlife Trust, she is the local co-ordinator for the Seasearch programme here in Sussex, she will be giving us a presentation on the work being carried out in our area, and about the Seasearch Observer course available for you to sign up to, which will enable you to join the Seasearch dive team on organised dives. This presentation will take place at Club Night on Wednesday 2nd May, please let us know if you are coming along so we know how many of you will be squeezing in to the classroom 😉

A Seasearch Observer course is running and available to you in mid-May, you could take part in this course, there are some pre-requisites, please see below. It is a two part course with classroom based training taking part of Saturday 12th May, with qualifying dives on Sunday 13th May.
The classroom course has lots of availability at the moment, however at date of writing this post, there are only 4 spaces left on the RIB for the qualifying dives on the 13th, however if there are a fair number of you interested, further dives will be organised. If you are definitely wanting to complete on that weekend, we suggest booking via the Sussex Seasearch webpage asap.

NB. The requirements for joining the dives are:
–          PADI AOW diver / BSAC Sports diver / equivalent
–          20 dives total – 10 in UK (or similar conditions
–          Third party diving insurance
–          Diving medical or self-declaration

Sussex Seasearch

Seasearch is a project for volunteer divers who have an interest in underwater life, want to learn more, and want to help protect the marine environment around the coasts of the UK.

The broad aim of Seasearch is to map the sea bed found in the near-shore zone around the whole of the Britain and Ireland. Additionally, the species encountered on the dives are also recorded, building up a database of where marine life is found.

The Sussex Wildlife Trust coordinates Seasearch in Sussex. We aim to find out more about the marine wildlife of Sussex as well as to learn more about seabed types and identify important sites. Many of our dives are focused on Marine Protected Areas in Sussex.

Ocean View Project Aware and Sea Shepherd SSUK Beach Clean Up – Saturday 3rd March

Posted on January 27, 2018

Beach Clean up

SATURDAY 3rd MARCH 10am start

Turtle in netWe all know that rubbish and plastic is a HUGE problem for our seas and the amazing creatures in it. Many of us watched, distraught at the scenes on the Blue Planet II last year, it is time to stop this attack on our seas and oceans

We at Ocean View are joining forces with Sea Shepherd UK for a Brighton Beach Clean Up this spring.

Starting locally we can make a difference, by helping to keep our local beaches clean we can be part of a bigger community taking care of our environment.

These beach cleans are have a great visual impact to other residents and visitors, to highlight the need for keeping our beaches and streets clean.

Sea Shepherd UK logoSea Shepherd UK are organising a series of Beach Cleans around the UK, we are working in partnership with them to allow you to take part in the below the water line clean up.

The clean up will start from by the Marina wall at what most of us divers know as the “Black Cat” area of the Beach at 10am, parking available in the car park at the end of Madeira Drive.

Young divers are welcome but need to have a parent or guardian diving with them. Equally if your child wants to partake in the above water clean up, you and they are more than welcome, again with a parent or guardian with them.

Beach rubbishYou will realistically need to be a drysuit diver as it’s likely to be a bit chilly, bringing some nice thick dive gloves to make sure you look after yourself.

We suggest getting your kit sorted the day before, or during the week beforehand to avoid an early morning battle for the car park 😉

For divers you will be getting kitted up ready to get in the water about 40 minutes before high tide.

Of course, if the weather determines that it is not safe for divers, the beach clean can carry on above the water line.

Get in touch if you need to organise some dive equipment with us for the dive.
You will need to show us your certification card for equipment rental.

Project Aware Ocean Killer posterProject AWARE® is a global movement for ocean protection powered by a community of adventurers. They connect the passion for ocean adventure with the purpose of marine conservation.

They work in partnership with PADI to educate about the plight of our Oceans.
