They are the tips of volcanoes that form part of a submerged mountain range providing a home to some of the oceans large pelagics, Mantas, Whales, Sharks and Dolphins. Where is Socorro?
The Socorro Islands are roughly a days sail south of Cabo San Lucas, which is located at the south tip of Baja Mexico. The islands are 240 miles (390 kilometers) off the Baja Peninsula, due to this remote location, the islands are a haven for the big animals diving at the cleaning stations of San Benedicto, Socorro and Roca Partida.
The world’s friendliest giant mantas
You can see giant mantas in many places around the world. But nowhere else boasts a population of giant mantas that literally seek out interaction with divers and snorkellers.
The behaviour these giant mantas exhibit is almost inexplicable. These gentle giants with a wingspan up to 20 feet (6m) consistently approach divers for intimate eye-to-eye encounters. If you are able to be calm and still in the water, you are almost sure to experience what we call “manta love.”
While mantas are the main reason to voyage out to Socorro, there are lots of other animals to see, including schooling hammerheads and silky sharks, plus 10 other species of sharks, bottlenose dolphins that consistently hang out with divers at certain dive sites, large schools of pelagic fish, and, in season, humpback whales.
What is the diving like at Socorro Island?
After an overnight voyage we arrive at these Jurassic Park-like islands and with a little luck from mother ocean will experience interactions with our giant mantas unlike anywhere else.
The mantas of the Socorro Islands love divers, they love to swim with divers, love to feel our bubbles hitting their bellies and then they quiver with excitement. Socorro is also home to humpback whales, dolphins and up to 10 types of sharks.
